Extra Credit System

Courses / Programmes / Activities For Extra Credits

All of students of PSN College of engineering and technology under autonomous stream are expected to register and earn 20 credits course apart from the maximum credits required for UG programmes for the award of degree. The students are free to choose activity or programme or course of their choice to earn the required number of credits.


  • Social Awareness Programme (2 credits)
    Social awareness programme includes the following activities
    1. Dissemination of Information on Government Welfare Schemes to villagers.(minimum one day).
    2. Guidance to school children.(10 hours)
    3. Organizing continuing Education programmes.(10 hours)
    4. Health Issues
    5. Cleanliness
    6. Sanitation and Hygiene
    A certificate from the headmaster/ panchayat president or complement authority is needed for claiming credits.
  • Extra-curricular activities (2 credits)
    Extracurricular activities include the following activities.
    1. National Service Scheme (NSS)
    2. National Cadet Corps (NCC)
    3. Red Ribbon Club (RRC)
    4. Youth Red Cross (YRC)
    5. ECO Club
    6. Blood Donors Club
    7. Photography Club
    8. Rotaract Club
    9. Fine arts Club
  • Value added programmes (3 credits)
    Value added programmes include the following activities. The guidelines for evaluating the value added programs will be framed by the course coordinator and approved by the value added programmes will be framed by the course co coordinator and approved by the academic council. The minimum and maximum strength for the value added programme is 50 marks.
    From the list, students can avail a maximum of four value added courses and one should be from BOSCH Centre if they avail more than one value added course.

      Certificate course on CFD, NDT, Fire and safety - 3 credits
  • Participation in extracurricular activities
    Participate in activities like cleaning campus - 1 credit
  • Attending camps organized by NCC/NSS - 2credits
  • Donating blood (one time only)
  • International certification - 3 credits
    All BE/ B.Tech students who successfully completed any international certification programmes listed below for three days extra credits. Microsoft, CISCO, SAP, Oracle, ASNT Level II, Mechanical software packages, Civil software packages, Electrical software packages, IBM – Specific product specification.
    Even if a candidate and produces certificates for more than one programme he is eligible for 3 credits only. International certificates registered during the duration of the programme of study in PSNCET alone are eligible for extra credits.
  • International language certificate - 3 credits
    Certificates from any Government certified Institutions or through distance education programme of a state funded University will be accepted by the Institute. Candidates clearing the Basic of first level can get 2 credits and candidates with Advanced or second level is eligible for 3 credits. Maximum extra credits for International Language Certificates is only 3 credits, even if the candidate produced valid certificates in more than one foreign language. The certificate is valid only, if the registration for the ‘International Language Certification’ is during the course of study in the Institute.
  • Publication in national/ international journals - 3 credits
    Publications in Scopus indexed any International / National Journals is eligible for 3 extra credits. Even a letter from the editor of the Journal regarding acceptance for publication of the paper will also be considered for extra credits. Single or multiple publications in a Journal will be considered for equal weightage only. Extra credits for “Publications in National / International Journals” will be given to ME / M.Tech students only if the journals are indexed in Scopus.
    If a paper presented in a conference is selected for publication in the conference proceeding and subsequently in a journal also with the same title. Credits will be given in one place only and the choice will be given to the students.
  • Publication in national / international conference - 2 credits
    Publications in conference proceedings are eligible for 2 extra credits. No separate weightage is given for multiple publications. Extra credits for “Publications in National / International Conference” proceedings will be given to ME / M.Tech and MCA students, only if the proceedings are with ISBN number.
  • Participation in conference / workshops/ symposium - 1 credit
  • Representation on sports and games - 4 credits
    Extra Credits for ‘Representation in Sports and Games’ is open for all the students of UG and PG programmes. Any student representing the Institute is eligible for 1 credit and earns two credits for representing the University. Candidate representing the state, will get 3 credits and earn 4 credits for representing the Country in any International events anyone representing the Institute in more than one event is eligible for two extra credits.
    If a candidate represent more than one level (University and State, College and University) weightage of highest level alone will be considered. The certificates have to be submitted to the coordinator through the physical director.
  • Clearing proficiency examination - 3 credits
    If a BE / B.Tech. Or M.Sc. (Integrated) programme students clears any one of the following examinations during the course of study in the Institute the candidate is eligible for 3 extra credits. GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, GATE, GMAT, CAT.
    Even if a candidate clears more than one proficiency examination the candidate is eligible for 3 credits only.
  • Self-learning programmes - 2 credits
    UG and PG students can also earn extra credits by registering for ‘Self Learning Courses’. The syllabus for the self-learning courses will be framed by the course co-coordinator and the candidates registering for ‘Self Learning Courses’ have to prepare for the terminal examination by self-study. The course co-coordinator will award internal assessment marks to the candidate based on the assignment marks to the candidate based on the following.
    Assignment (five assignments) - 30 marks (5*6)
    Seminar- 20 marks (2*10)
    End semester- 50 marks based on 50 objective type questions).
    Elective subjects to be earned from self-learning courses provided it was taken as two credits irrespective of the credits given to the elective. Some self-learning courses are common for all branches of study, where as some course are only for non-circuit branches or for non-computer science students only.
    The maximum credits to be earned from self-learning courses are TWO. The minimum and the maximum strength for self-learning courses is 50 marks. If the candidate failed to secure the minimum marks one, one more chance will be given to the candidate. If the candidate failed to get a pass mark even in the second attempt, then the candidate has to register for a new extra credit course. Following are the approved self-learning courses:

    3. Winding of electrical machines
    4. Sensor networks
    5. Printed circuit board design
    6. Virtual instruments
    7. Hardware trouble shooting
    8. Personal management
    9. Taxation and planning
    10. Banking insurance and enquiry services
    11. Non-conventional energy sources
    12. Java
    $ all except CSE,IT,@ All except EEE.
  • Membership in professional bodies
    National - 1 credit
    International - 2 credits
    Student membership in internship professional bodies like computer society of India (CSI), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IEET)…etc… will earn 2 credits for the B.E/ B.Tech.
  • Representing the college in cultural competitions in reputed institute/organizations. (3credits)
    Any BE/B.Tech students participating in cultural competitions held in reputed institutions/ organizations (solo or group) is eligible for 2 extra credits. Recognitions in first two places will earn a maximum of 3 credits to each member.
  • Participation in media (2credits)
    To encourage multi divisional activities of students enrolled in BE/B.Tech, it is decided to give due weightage for their participation in media related activities. Participating in media TV / Radio network can earn 2 extra credits. Participation in local channels is eligible for 1 credit. Valid certificates from media to be given to institute through the course co- ordinator
  • Won an award in state level competitions - 2 credits
  • Won award in district level competitions - 2 credits
  • Any award by a BE/ B.Tech student in a state or district level completion organized by the central, state or district authorities is eligible for 2 extra credits. The competitions may be in sports, cultural actvites, quiz, essay writing on any other event approved by the faculty in charge for the extra credits.
  • Others - 2 credits
    Students of autonomous programmes are also eligible to earn credits under the category ‘others’ by producing a valid certificate for the following trade/ skill/ activities.
    Typewriting lower/ higher
    Two wheeler license
    Four wheeler license
    Certificate from st. Johns ambulance services
    Voyage for a minimum period of 6 days (only for marine engineering students) Representatives for class committees/ mess representatives/ class representative (each 1 credit)
    Training in oil tanker familiarization (3 credits)
    Yoga camp (minimum 5 days) (2 credits).
  • Student volunteers (1 credit)
    Any student of autonomous programme offered in PSN College of engineering and technology in the activities listed below will be considered as “student volunteers” and are eligible to earn credit for the respective events.
    SN Trophy/ college days/ college day/ sports day/ graduation day and similar functions of the college cultural or any other events organized by the PSNCET. Assisting the librarian in the library after the regular working hours Serving in anti ragging committee of the college.
    Students assisting the librarian as a volunteer can earn one credit provided he/she assist the librarian for minimum period of 30 hours. Only 5 students can assist the librarian at a time.
    Students can assist the librarian in Downloading the requirements of staff/ research scholars/ PG students
    Downloading e books Checking the classification of books in the racks & arranging them in the respective racks.
    The credits will be given to the students based on the recommendations of faculty in charge.
  • Adventure sports (2credits)
    Students can two extra credits from adventures sports. Participating in any one of the following events listed adventure sports the students can earn 1 credit.
    1. Para gliding
    2. Rock climbing
    3. Trekking
    4. River rating
    5. Boat work
    Certificates issued by a recognized society only will be considered for 2 extra credits.
  • Professional training programmes (2 credits)
    Students can earn two credits under professional certification if they produce certificate for attending workshop [2 credits for 5 days workshop and 1 credit for 3 days workshop] on the following topics arranged in PSNCET or in any other educational institutions recognized by a university.
    1. MATLAB
    2. Lab view (CLAD)
    3. PLCC
    4. SCDAA
    5. Full engine room simulator course
    6. ANSYS HFSS
    7. Robotics
    8. Power world simulator
    9. PSCAD
    For marine engineering students the following courses coming under standards of training certification and watch keeping (STCW) are considered as courses for extra credits.
    1. Elementary first aid
    2. Personal survival techniques
    3. Personal safety and social responsibility
    4. Fire fighting and prevention
    5. Security and seafarers
    On successful completion of any three courses mentioned above, they are eligible to get 2 credits under EC.
  • Participation in cultural programmes organized by the college (1 credit)
  • Best mini project (1 credit)
  • Best project (1 credit)
  • 100% attendance in a semester (1 credit)
  • Blood donation on demand in emergency situation (2 credits)
  • Bravery award (2 credits)
    Bravery award given by the state government will be given 1 credit and by central government will be given 2 credits.
  • NPTEL Course/ examination (3 credits)
    NPTEL Course/ examination conducted by national institutes like IIT will be considered for 3 credits.
  • Career oriented programmes (2 credits)
    The guidelines for evaluating the career oriented programmes will be given by the respective course co coordinator with the approval of the academic council. The minimum strength for the carrier oriented programmes is 10 and 30. The passing minimum for the career oriented programmes is 50 marks. The following programmes and carry a weightage of 2 credits each:
    1. Website development and hosting
    2. Animation
    3. Firmware development program
    4. Interior design and architecture
    5. Hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
    If the candidate has participated/ published in more than one event/journal, weightage for participation in one event alone will be considered.
